Microsoft antitrust proceedings

  Short Summary

Because of the whole Windows 10 update terror, I realized a long-held plan in May 2016: switch to Linux. An Acer ES1-331-C0YK purchased without Windows, Linux Ubuntu 16.04 installed. November 2016 my wife gets the next Linux notebook in the family. Even January 2017 are over 10 different offers for economical 13"notebooks without Windows listed at Geizhals.at (prize compairson). However, in April have all disappeared.

When Asus, Acer, and Lenovo hp simultaneously offer all economical 13" notebooks only with Windows, there is a strong suspicion of a Microsoft intervention.

  Better, cheaper, more user-friendly

Battery life is very important for me. That's why April 2016 began the first test with Linux Ubuntu on my old Asus UL30A. This was first upgraded to Dual Boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 16.04. In the middle of the energy consume test, Windows 7 is shooting itself into the knee: one of the two CPUs is suddenly used 100% by svchost.exe. The same horror that happened to me on the flight to Beijing in 2010. In Windows you are only a tolerated co-user of a notebook.

What can the competition management do when a sportsman drinks before the finals 2 liters of beer and a bottle of whiskey? The energy consume test goes 10.3 to 13.9 watts for Linux .

My old Lide 20 scanner works, for which there are no drivers since Windows 7. Install drivers? My Samsung Laser printer also prints completely without any driver installation. For the user-friendliness, there are only positive surprises.

Windows is usually priced at 130 EUR in the hardware. This excludes only finally crippled notebooks. Microsoft has created its own industry. Not upgradable, only 2 GB of RAM, 32 GB of memory, for such cripples the producer has to pay less for the Windows license.

  Offer thinned

November 2016 the next step, my wife gets an economic 13" notebook. By the summer of 2017 the rest of the family is to be converted to new Linux notebooks, unfortunately necessary after the total Medion Disaster, all 4 Medion Akoya S4216 from 2013 unusable.

In January, there was still a rich offer of Asus, Acer, hp and Lenovo for economic 13" notebooks available on Geizhals.at (price compairson), nothing more in April. I give Acer Austria an opportunity to take position. Without Windows Acer offers only 13" notebooks around 950 EUR. In January, three notebooks without Windows could be purchased at a price of 950 EUR.

With significantly smaller screen I could buy the Acer B117, with 0.9 kg more weight one with 15 "display. For 650 EUR more even one with 13" display. It would be too conspicuous, if the offers without Windows completely disappear. Therefore only a strong thinning of the offer. For me there is the urgent suspicion that Microsoft has intervened, the urgent need for a new cartel procedure.

  Participation in the digital society

There's a big difference for the poor, whether a notebook costs 270 or 400 EUR. It is a big difference for a family with children whether you can buy 2 or 3 notebooks for 800 EUR. You can not spend money twice. When I pay 130 EUR more for a notebook just because I was forced to do such a combination business because of lack of other offers, then this money is missing for a donation to Ubuntu, which really deserved it. Maybe not 130 EUR for each notebook, but I would donate 50 EUR from the whole family.

  Plan 30-3-0

Over the next 30 years, a tripling of the global economy with a simultaneous reduction of fossil energy down to almost zero.

Investment Avalanche - Innovation Avalanche - Economic Boom

Even if the current price development reduces the costs of reducing CO2 in the atmosphere, 12,000 billion a year are not affordable for today's humanity. However, it is affordable in the case of a threefold increase in the global economy and further cost reduction. Why should it be affordable? Thawing Permafrost floors and outgassing methane hydrate are an enormous threat potential for climate development. A little reduction could be too little. Even 100% less CO2 emissions could still be too little. 200% less, ie no further human CO2 emission plus active reduction by filtering and splitting, should be sufficient.

For this, the economic conditions must be created. That this can only work with the creation of worldwide wealth is nevertheless a nice side effect.

Religion in the sense of relegere

Latin relegere: “to consider carefully, to contemplate, to think about repeatedly, to be thoughtful in view of an important issue.”

This should be the first duty of beings "created in the image of God". In the natural sciences, this happens all the time, before their achievements can have only the greatest respect. The opposite must be said about the politics.

The Infinitism certainly describes the best possible for all currently living humans, nature and future generations to an unimaginably distant future. This spread will require much time and labor.

Windows 10 Update Terror: My way to Linux Ubuntu
The Windows 10 Update Terror as a trigger to finally realize a long-held plan: The change to Linux.

Runtime and power consumption Windows vs Linux
Since there are contradictory statements, the first test on my old ASUS UL30A: How is the energy consumption under Windows 7 and Linux Ubuntu 16.04?

Planned Obsolescence by Windows
My first Linux Ubuntu test: I discover an icon with ''Simple Scan'', let's see what happens when I connect my old scanner from 2004 to the notebook. Surprise!

Installation Linux Ubuntu
The Acer ES1-331-C0YK bought in the middle of May 2016 will be equipped with SSD and more RAM in July 2016. On the SSD, Linux Ubuntu 16.04 is installed.

Installation Linux Ubuntu - Part 2
The hard disk can be divided automatically or manually. The language for the installation can be selected from many different languages.

Installation Linux Ubuntu - Part 3
After name, computer name and password have been set, the installation starts, as some properties of Linux Ubuntu 16.04 is pointed out.

Installation Linux Ubuntu - Part 4
A few more screens with references to the properties of Ubuntu, then the installation is complete.

UEFI enforces setting password for UEFI
Microsoft's lobbying at the UEFI, the successor to the BIOS, forces you to set a password if you want to use a different operating system than Windows.

Ubuntu Software
As simple as the Google Play Store is looking for software and install it. Android is basically only the most widely used Linux variant.

Eject Media, but it is still occupied
Would not it be great if not only the error message ''The disk is still occupied by one or more applications'', but a list of these applications?

Update costs using mobile internet connection
Such a query would have saved Microsoft some legal proceedings because many GB updates had been downloaded over expensive mobile Internet connections.

Ubuntu 16.04 Tools preinstalled
In addition to LibreOffice and Thunderbird, very handy tools for mass storage are also preinstalled. Overview of data usage and partitioning of media.

The Empire Strikes Back
May 2017: The purchase of new Linux notebooks for the entire family is brutally stopped. Not a single economical 13'' notebook without operating system is more to be found in the offers.

Request at Acer Austria
How is it possible that within a quarter a large range of economical 13'' notebooks without operating system suddenly only with Windows is available?

Acer Austria answers
Of course, you also get a 13 '' notebook without Windows, but only with expensive high-end models, which are more than three times as expensive as Your devices.

The duel of free browsers
How did the pre-installed MSIE Microsoft Internet Explorer browser work against the other free browsers? From 88 to 5 in 14 years!

Why? Did Microsoft intervene?
Why does the offer of economical 13 '' notebooks without operating system completely disappear? In January 2017 all major manufacturers had been present.
